John Duffield
John Duffield Senior partner

John Duffield has founded and chaired two of the best known businesses in the UK fund management industry, Jupiter Asset Management and New Star Asset Management. Founded in 1985, Jupiter grew its assets to £14 billion under John’s stewardship. From inception in 2001, New Star’s funds grew to a peak of £24.7 billion in June 2007. Under John’s stewardship, Jupiter and New Star received approximately 200 investment awards between 1995 and 2009.

Rupert Ruvigny
Rupert Ruvigny Finance and operations partner

Prior to joining Brompton, Rupert Ruvigny was chief operating officer and compliance director of New Star Asset Management from its inception. Previously, he was deputy chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ financial services regulatory practice. After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1984, he was made a partner of Price Waterhouse in 1992, specialising in investment management and regulation. He was seconded to IMRO as the director of monitoring and investigations.

Michael Astor
Michael Astor Technical partner

Before joining Brompton, Michael Astor fulfilled the same role at New Star Asset Management and at Jupiter Asset Management. At New Star, he was responsible for systems integration and development during a period of rapid expansion resulting from organic growth and a series of acquisitions. He joined Jupiter from the electronics industry having studied engineering and economics.

John Jay
John Jay Business development partner

Prior to joining Brompton, John Jay was New Star Asset Management’s development director, joining the company at its inception in 2001 after a 21-year career in journalism. He was City editor of the Sunday Times in 1986, became City and business editor of the Sunday Telegraph in 1989 and was appointed managing editor of the Sunday Times’ business section in 1995. At New Star, John had board level responsibility for private clients.

Gill Lakin
Gill Lakin Chief investment officer

Gill Lakin has 28 years’ experience in investment. Prior to joining Brompton, Gill was chief investment officer at Thornhill Investment Management, where she managed the investment team, with responsibility for the investment process including asset allocation and fund selection. Earlier in her career, Gill was a senior fund manager and head of UK equity research at Société Générale Asset Management having worked previously at Prudential Portfolio Managers, where she ran two retail funds. A graduate of Somerville College, Oxford, she also holds an MSc from the London Business School.

Ken Malone
Ken Malone Head of real estate funds business

Ken has 35 years’ property surveying and investment experience. Before joining Brompton, Ken was head of real estate asset management at New Star Asset Management. An associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Ken began his career at Chesterton. In 1990, he joined Estates & General, taking responsibility for the strategic asset management of the company’s portfolio, before moving to New Star in 2004.

Mark Skinner
Mark Skinner Sales and marketing partner

Mark Skinner was New Star’s retail fund sales and marketing director from 2001 to 2009 and, following Henderson’s purchase of New Star, he became Henderson’s head of pan-European distribution. Prior to joining New Star, Mark was Norwich Union’s sales and marketing director. After working for the Financial Times and Save and Prosper, he joined Baring Asset Management, becoming a Baring Asset Management director in 1996 and chairman of Baring International Fund Managers in Dublin.

Andrew Thompson
Andrew Thompson Head of multi-asset sales

Prior to joining Brompton, Andrew was head of strategic distribution at Sarasin & Partners. Andrew has 30 years’ experience in financial services having begun his career as an investment adviser before joining Legal & General as a regional sales executive. Subsequently, Andrew worked at Scottish Equitable and then Morley Fund Management, where he established and built up the firm’s UK wholesale business. He joined Sarasin in 2007, initially as head of wholesale UK distribution.

Chessy Smith
Chessy Smith Head of operations

Chessy Smith has worked in financial services for 23 years. Prior to joining Brompton, Chessy was head of compliance at New Star Asset Management and deputy head of compliance at Henderson Global Investors following Henderson’s New Star takeover in 2009. Chessy began her career as a PricewaterhouseCoopers chartered accountant, specialising in asset management and investment regulation.

Stephen Philpot
Stephen Philpot Head of information and technology

Before joining Brompton, Stephen was head of service delivery at New Star Asset Management, responsible for the operational information technology environment. Prior to New Star, he was head of technical services at ABN-Amro Bank. He has more than 25 years’ experience in IT covering operations and development and has particular experience in outsourcing.
